They go back as far as the late 20s And every image taken was either by my great uncle Sal, Captain Tony my grandfather, and myself it’s an art project in the works I have been working on for the last 20 years is also the birth of some of her books you may see a couple repeats and some misspelled words that’s because this is raw and unedited a lot of the stuff I can’t put on Facebook

This was one of Sal‘s published stories from 1935. It explains his being sent to the Newark Psychic Center because he was reading people’s minds. This included two of his teachers. The article also talks about his powers to make these bizarre masks with secret ingredients. He also learned how to play the piano by ear and mastered more than 50 Italian operas. He played for Saint Anthony’s in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

This is my great uncle Sal walking through the graveyard in Hillside New Jersey 1934 He was having a hard time in his Elizabeth studio some of the neighbors weren’t happy about the mask and photography studio and the things that went on there Sal was threatened by the police department to leave town

This was just one of those photos 20 years ago where I was standing on Broadway and Canal Street in Chinatown I have been taking candids of people in New York City for 30 years if you go to my website portraitsofnewyork.com.
