My great uncle Sal loved large ships he already traveled around the world twice believe it or not he was an undercover photographer for the OSS that was CIA back during the Second World War and the Korean War this is the Queen Mary from 1962 Sal took this image with a large format camera this is one of the many negatives I have I enlarged this negative to the size of 3 x 2‘ it’s stayed sharp as a tack I sold Image to a private buyer I saw it framed in his office spectacular
Just some famous and semi famous people who sell photographed in his studio in Manhattan 40s 50s and 60s Gene Hackman James Earl Jones Burrell Ives all the midgets from the Wizard of Oz and then hundreds of people that you will recognize but not know their name I have some crazy negatives If you know what I mean
In 1945 Sal did this gentleman‘s headshot back in the day all the gangsters let Sal do their portraits because he gave them a free copy this guy right here I don’t want to say hes name he was involved with my grandfather Captain Tony pretty much everybody knows the story it’s been published in people magazine, New York Times, they made a movie about it and of course his book This guy right here is the one who put out the contract on my grandfather that’s why he hid out in Key West, by the 50s Sal ended up taking care of The problem and everybody became friends Captain Tony started smuggling rum and always gave those Jersey guys a free case the good old days I have the images and the stories
Terracina West Studios 2004 I had a bunch of cool studios in my day I also managed and worked for some very big studios in New York and Jersey this studio right here Terracina West Studios was the coolest because by this time I inherited 110 of my great uncle Sal‘s masks besides them being in the studio I put them all over the house hallways The master bedrooms upstairs downstairs in the recreation room with the bar the reason why I said masks up everywhere so I could do different head shots without changing the backdrop this photo was taken in going up the steps to the second floor If the model was not tall or a little chubby I could do magic on those steps and make them look sensational that’s what I do
This is not a painting and as far as Photoshop I gave it a little contrast and brightened it up with my iPhone Lisa and I were on a honeymoon in Key West 2017 Staying at the parakeet resort the moon was very bright that night I laid back hit my field flash to load up the palm trees and did a slow shutter Speed this was the result I did pick up some things being a professor of a toggery for for 42 years
What you’re looking at here is one of my custom-made tiles from Italy 20 years ago I sold these images of New York City, The Jersey shore, and images from Key West from the 40s 50s 60s and 70s my great uncle Sal and my grandfather took a lot of photos, when I arrived there in the 70s I ended up becoming a professional photographer doing a lot of postcards and working for the newspaper as a photographer there between all three of us we have captured key west for five Decades without bragging I could pretty much say no one can match our collection with imagery and some pretty wild stories
Check out the story way back in 1937 great uncle Sal was making a lot of masks they were used in some Broadway plays sal always used I’ve been backgrounds of a lot of his portraits in his studio in Manhattan this mask right here that I’m posing with is called Mr. Neptune the mask of knowledge he’s over 80 years old in the last 20 years I have used him a lot and a lot of my photo shoots at my studio he is now semi retired living at our house in Florida with 40 of his other friends Anyway some costume Company in New York commissions Sal to make a bunch of masks for their company to be in the 1939 New York worlds fair sal was so excited he made 18 large masks he wanted them to be so special so in the papier-mâché mix he mixed in pyramids scrapings from Egypt, Haitian voodoo dust, A bunch of secret potions from around the world, sal even got a little creative and sprinkled in some Cambodian Opium which was something he like back then not too much though and then put the cherry on
This is something really cool right here this is one of Sal’s large format negatives I love playing around with them I took this one put it in front of my living room window with the curtain in front of me and the front yard then I used my iPhone to take a picture of the negative since it was so bright outside just to let you know there is now close to 470 images on this category you were on every one of them has A interesting story that’s because every image was either taken by Sal or myself and yes I’ll break our lives have been very interesting of course Sal and my grandfather Captain Tony could put me in their side pockets but trust me Im no slouch to adventure
Just some girls that ended up in front of my camera In the last 49 years That’s right I’ve been doing this a long time I think I got the hang of it
This photo was taken in 1949 when Sal had his mask photography studio when he traveled with the Bizzarre traveling carnival the world of mirth those three masks in the back Were made for the 1939 New York worlds fair they never made it somebody fucked up Sal’s contract sal found out who did it and did those people pay dearly don’t fuck with Sal Anyway these mass now for over eight years old the two on the right are with Lisa and I here in Florida with 56 others One is in our living room that’s the one in the middle called the bitch for a good reason the mask on the far right is Mr. Neptune I’m ask of knowledge the leader of the pack He actually has his own room A crazy pirate looking one who doesn’t get along with any of the other masks he still in New Jersey at my dads cousins house Lois I’m sure you all know that’s Sal working on a mask The cute Italian woman is my great uncle Luigi‘s wife Palma She passed away about 10 years ago 102 years old she had some stories b
